God’s nation has been surrounded by her enemies for over 3,000 years. Humanly speaking, Israel shouldn’t exist after countless invasions and violations of her borders by those whose intent is to destroy God’s people and land. And yet, Eretz, Yizrael, Israel, still thrives today.
Why this miracle? Because God is the true defender of Israel’s borders! Yes, the Holy Spirit is on constant “patrol” around Israel’s land. And we who love God’s chosen people and His land can make a daily impact on the nation’s security through the incredible power of prayer.
This is not to discount at all the necessity of Israel’s military defenses. But notice what King David—Israel’s greatest defender—wrote about the ultimate source of the nation’s security:
“All the nations . . . surrounded me on every side, but in the name of the Lord I cut them off. . . . I was pushed back and about to fall, but the Lord helped me. The Lord is my strength and my defense; he has become my salvation” (Psalm 118:10–14).
David was a mighty king and warrior, yet he knew the secret of Israel’s defense and security of her borders was in calling on the strong name of the Lord . . . in PRAYER.
That’s exciting for us to know today. Why?
Because Jesus Christ, the risen Son of God who is ruling on heaven’s throne at this moment, “is the same yesterday and today and forever” (Hebrews 13:8).
That means your prayers for Israel today—this very day—can have just as much power and impact as David’s prayers! And we can pray confidently of God’s promise to the Jews: “As the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the Lord surrounds his people both now and forevermore” (Psalm 125:2).
