Remembering Kristallnacht: A Call to Stand with Israel and God's People, 86 Years Later

As we mark 86 years since Kristallnacht, the “Night of Broken Glass,” a tragic night when the world witnessed a brutal wave of violence and hatred against the Jewish people. On November 9–10, 1938, Nazi Germany launched an organized assault on Jewish homes, synagogues, schools, and businesses. Windows were shattered, buildings were set ablaze, and lives were forever changed. Kristallnacht would tragically pave the way for the Holocaust, resulting in the loss of six million Jewish lives.

For Christian Women For Israel, Kristallnacht serves as a solemn reminder of the devastating consequences of hatred left unchecked and the responsibility of all believers to stand against evil. In commemorating this day, we also honor the courageous Christians who risked everything to protect Jewish lives during one of history’s darkest hours.

The Night of Broken Glass

During those harrowing two days, nearly 1,000 synagogues were destroyed, over 7,000 Jewish-owned businesses were looted or burned, and countless Jewish cemeteries were desecrated across Germany and Austria. Schools were raided, and homes were wrecked. Tragically, 30,000 Jewish men were arrested and sent to concentration camps in an early act of what would become a horrific campaign of genocide.

Stories of Christian Courage Amidst the Darkness

Though the world largely looked on in silence, some brave Christians refused to turn a blind eye. Their actions reflect the values of Christian Women For Israel today, demonstrating how acts of courage and conviction can shine light in the deepest darkness.

One such story is that of Pastor André Trocmé, a Protestant minister in the small French town of Le Chambon-sur-Lignon. Though not directly involved on Kristallnacht, he heard of the horrific events and committed to shielding Jews fleeing Nazi persecution. Along with his congregation, Pastor Trocmé courageously sheltered hundreds of Jewish families, helping them escape to safety and avoid deportation to concentration camps. His faith-driven actions provide a powerful example of standing with God’s people, even when it involves personal risk.

Another inspiring figure is Corrie ten Boom, a Dutch Christian who, along with her family, provided refuge to Jews during the Nazi occupation. The ten Boom family built a hidden room in their home, where they protected Jews from the horrific fate of Kristallnacht’s aftermath. Ultimately, Corrie and her family were arrested and sent to concentration camps for their defiance. Yet, Corrie survived and spent her life sharing her testimony of love, forgiveness, and the enduring faith that guided her actions.

Why We Remember, Why We Stand

For Christian Women For Israel, the legacy of Kristallnacht calls us to be vigilant and prepared to respond to hatred and persecution wherever we see it. As we witness the disturbing rise of antisemitic attacks and renewed hostility toward Israel, we are reminded that the past must inform our actions today.

Just as these Christians stood boldly with the Jewish people during the Holocaust, we are called to be modern-day Esthers, standing firm and using our voices to protect and uplift Israel and her people. This anniversary is more than a moment of reflection—it is a call to action, prayer, and unity.
